Maybe it's not do we believe or don't we believe, but how much helplessness society wishes to tolerate. Shell shock, which became a thing after WWI, resulted in the spontaneous establishment of field hospitals with hundreds of individuals manifesting the "condition". Finally, someone in command insisted that this was not something the services were prepared to indulge to this extent and all the tents were folded and the field hospitals were shut down. While there is certainly a spectrum of severity in terms of such conditions, life is difficult, bad things happen to all of us, and we either learn to cope better or decide to give in expecting less of ourselves. We may need help recognizing we can learn ways to moderate the risk of recurrence and to be more realistic about any potential of recurrence of the horrific event, but often the individuals most vulnerable to avoidance and dissociation have many antecedent experiences which have occurred for which they are already poorly dealing with and find their suboptimal coping mechanisms at the tipping point of collapsing. Such individuals will require more psychotherapy to address entrenched thoughts about themselves and life's risks before they can resume effective functioning.

I have to say that the NARM approach, our method is to my experience, study and research along my whole life, such an inclusive Heartful, non-pathologizing and non-judgmental approach , as it is putting accent on curiosity and looking at the humans, we are with the understanding that our story created survival states/distortion/Iidentification …. I found it very complete, and I’m sure it will still evolve, and I really liked the part of respecting what people have at heart (talking about the soul, talking about spirit, talking about whatever is important for the one) and that is often indeed, talked down or poorly and judgmentally by many people from many different venues. This is something I really appreciate with you guys also in this interview thank you so much for this. ❤

I too felt nervous about the prospective of sharing it with some of my friends who are maybe Muslims as there is this confusion about racism and Islamophobia and abuse. I also feel how it resonate in me about trauma in families and how it is difficult to speak about it with other members, how they will feel the need to protect the group even if it means denying the trauma one of the member has encountered, it means they can deny their own vulnerability and own trauma eventually too….

I think its really unkind and inappropriate for folks to comment about the interviewers voice.. did find it odd that she didnt seem to have heard about drama triangle (plus) roles , but perhaps that was an effort to give the audience a way in. Separatley.. i do think, regarding the non responsive bystander role, that while projectice, clients are often projecting past mental heath providers , as well as or instead of the original bystander in their family

Excellent interview. His point that there is a glut of therapists and that access isn't the real issue sounds spot on. Indeed, the real issue is the lack of meaningful psychotherapy available. The good clinicians I know really are booked up. Also, patients should be educated about something else: professional fees tend to be positively correlated with the quality of services. Thus, patients who "value shop" for a therapist are making a big mistake. Fees, as long as they are usual and customary, should be the patient's last consideration. For example, would they also prefer the cheapest surgeon available if they went into hospital - good luck with that.

DID may be true in the severely traumatised. The issue is that we often see it in those with no trauma or minimal trauma history, and that's why there is doubt over the likelihood of minimal trauma causing such an extreme reaction, or 'DID'.

The interviewer comes off as a bit un-authentic at times, just her prosody and use of counselling lingo platitudes. Whereas Nancy appers totally authentic and uses very different language...
